PM says current price intervention system benefits less than 20 per cent of farmers.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Sunday that the current commodity price intervention system benefited less than 20 per cent of farmers.

As a result, the current pledging system needs to be reviewed, Abhisit said during his weekly TV programme on Channel 11.

He said the pledging schemes for corns, cassavas, and rice had problems and would cause the government to suffer a loss of up to Bt35 billion. The prime minister said the government had to spend up to Bt150 billion for the commodity pledging system for the last season.
